West Coast Highway Upgrade
Thank you to those who joined my mailing list and provided feedback on the plan for the West Coast Highway Upgrade. This Main Roads WA survey had the highest number of responses ever submitted and almost 70% of you support the future plan for West Coast Highway. You can read the results here.
As a local, I want to make sure this design is viable and will enhance our vibrant community - that is why I want to hear from you on this proposal.
The public consultation on the future planning design concept for West Coast Highway concluded in February 2022. Since then, Main Roads has completed its review, and the Western Australia Planning Commission has endorsed the proposed plan for the West Coast Highway.
Following this review, the Minister for Planning has officially authorised the establishment of a Planning Control Area (PCA). This designated zone aims to protect the future road corridor from any developments or changes that could interfere with the planned project.
Currently, the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage is actively working on amendments to the Metropolitan Region Scheme (MRS), which serves as the overarching planning framework for the region.
The Metropolitan Region Scheme Bill 2024 was introduced into Parliament on August 8, 2024. This bill focuses on clarifying the ability of the Western Australian Planning Commission to prepare and approve district structure plans and regional planning scheme policies, as well as identifying regional infrastructure plan areas. Streamlining these processes will make them more efficient and user-friendly for all stakeholders involved.
These amendments will likely reflect the new planning priorities and infrastructure needs associated with the West Coast Highway.
This is a long-term planning study aimed at making necessary changes to the Metropolitan Region Scheme (MRS). There will be more opportunities for your input and discussion in the future, especially once funding becomes available to move forward with the project.
